Take Out the Best in You

A lot of people seem to have low self-esteem or don’t have enough confidence in their own selves. Most of the time, they suffer from inferiority complex which in turn makes them feeling lacking.

What they need is to discover their own strengths and interests so that working on it will take out the best in them.

However, the question lies on how you will be able to discover your expertise.

Some tips that you may consider

  1. First thing that you could do is define what is best about you. People have various definitions of the term expert. Some based it on the extent of knowledge one has. Others look for one’s achievement in life or how successful he has become. How about you? How do you define best in your own terms?
  2. After defining the term, you should also be able to identify how or why did you consider those traits or criteria to define one’s expertise. This way, you will also be able to learn how you can become an expert in your own field.
  3. In what fields are you interested in? Remember that inspiring one’s self is the best way to do action. Also, you have to be motivated to work, that makes your output more satisfying not just to the spectators but most importantly to yourself.
  4. Have you ever given the time to think about what you do best? Yes, you may be an employee in a company, but is the description of the job really suitable to your skills and talents? Your success depends on how you perform, and performing your best can easily be achieved if it is in line with your natural human gift.
  5. Feedback from the people around you may come as constructive or negative criticism. The best thing for you to do is listen to the positive comments and maintain them. Then work more on the negative ones. Focus on them, so that you can do better the next time.
  6. They say that experience is the best teacher. However, experience alone cannot do anything. Reflect on them and discover which are useful and which points to your weakness so that you may not do the same mistake again.
  7. Life is a constant learning, so never cease to learn. Accept all things as they come. Always bear in mind the saying about life being too short for grudges and other things that cause unhappiness. It’s also true to let go of the things that cannot be changed. This way, you are lessening your burden.
  8. You may have idols or people that you look up to and try to imitate them. You will never become the person you want to if you always imitate them. Create your own identity and make a unique self.
  9. Enjoy life. Your career, friends, family and activities are what make up your life. Cherish every moment with them because your love is also one of the things that is best in you.
  10. Evaluate yourself. Have a constant judgement about yourself. Are you growing? Are you leading to the negative side? An every check-up of yourself makes you strong because you are able to source out the power to renew yourself and take out only the best in you.

  1. I was lucky enough to discover what was best about me early on and I am now doing what I love to do for a while. It’s wonderful to wake up each morning with the excitement of a new day of doing something that makes you happy :).

    • I feel the same way as you luke. I found my calling in life early on, and every day I wake up I am excited about todays work, spending time with my partner and having fun in nature!

  2. Feedback can be immensely important and I pay attention to negative feedback and try to improve but I feel I get the most from constructive criticism – the kind of criticism that doesn’t focus on me but on my actions. Some people just love to attack a person and those aren’t going to help at all. I choose to focus on people that target what I do and I do my best to improve my future actions.

  3. Been very lucky to have a wonderful mom and dad that always told me that I should keep learning all my life because I will always have something new to learn. Some people think learning stops after they graduate but it just starts at that moment.

  4. It took me years to understand that every single moment is unique and you’ll never get it back! I was working myself to death until recently but I realized I should be living instead of just existing so I started to do more of the things I like and relax more.

  5. I have a few people I look up to like my dad, Oprah and Celine Dion, but I don’t try to actually imitate them. I just love to use their stories to inspire me and get me through the tougher times. I often find great power within by just looking at a picture of them.

  6. Wonderful post, Selma! In my opinion, if you aren’t trying to learn new things and improve you are just going downhill. Some people think they are standing still if they aren’t learning something new but I disagree. You are either becoming a better person or a worse one. There is no way in between.

    • I couldn’t agree with you more, Tamika! Almost everyone I know thinks they don’t need to learn new things and some feel they have become experts in what they do. As soon as you think you’re an expert that can’t learn anything, you are just proving you know nothing. It’s like Socrates said “the only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing.”

      • Yeah, you never stop learning no matter how great you are! I learned this from my boss who hasn’t stopped learning even if he is almost 60! He keeps telling us that he will keep learning until the day he’ll die and maybe even afterwards!

    • Completely agree with you Tamika , we should always be learning new things and letting our minds discover new things if we want to advance in life and stay internally healthy.

  7. Such a fantastic read Selma, it really is! I suffer from very low levels of self esteem sometimes. I am going to follow these steps to make myself a better me, starting from now!

    Thanks again! 🙂

  8. 10 steps to success, love it! I know from personal experience that these tips will help you become a better person who is confident in ones self!

  9. #9 is what speaks to me the most! if we can’t let ourselves enjoy the little things in our life such as friends and family, then we have no hope of being happy with anything else in life, in my opinion..

  10. Loved reading and watching the video to this! Peoples self esteem can often hold them back from doing great things with their life! I hope everyone feeling down about themselves gets the chance to read this article/video!

  11. For self esteem and confidence, I think it is always good to be surrounded by things you enjoy. During school years that is harder to do, but as soon as you hit adulthood you need to pursue your interests and find your passions 🙂

  12. This was very thought provoking, there are quite a few aspects of my life I am gonna try and change now. thanks for posting this! 🙂

  13. I find it very hard to identify my own skills, traits, perks etc, I don’t know why but I can never pinpoint anything positive about myself when on the spot.. If you have a partner or a close friend/family get them to name your traits, they won’t lie, and will give you a self-esteem boost!

  14. I found these tips to be very beneficial! Understanding yourself is the key to eternal happiness and self confidence..

  15. I actually found it easier to follow the video than to read the transcript. You’ve made some good points about getting the best out of us and I agree that you have to find out what you are good at and try to improve yourself all your life and become an expert in that field.

  16. Will never forget the day I realized what I wanted to do with my life! It’s a feeling that can’t be explained in words and I wish everyone can feel it in their lifetime. I had to do some of the things I didn’t quite like to get there but it was so worth it! I think you need to test a few jobs before finding the right one, the one that fulfills you professionally and maybe even spiritually.
